Fractional reserve banking refers to a system in which banks are legally obliged to keep hold of
a fraction of its deposits in reserve. However, in recent dacades some countries have no
such "reserve requirements" at all, whilst in others, reserve requirements are only
enforced for certain types of account and not for others. Despite these changes,
the phrase "fractional reserve banking" is still widely used to describe our monetary system.
